Generative AI in Editorial Media – Insights from Finland

This session explored how Generative AI has been reshaping the editorial media landscape, with a focus on Finnish media companies. Participants examined how organizations have integrated AI into their journalistic workflows—ranging from content creation and newsroom automation to the management of text archives and strategies for enhancing audience engagement. The discussion also highlighted the critical role of university-industry collaborations in driving innovation and accelerating the responsible adoption of AI technologies across the media sector.

Speakers:

🔹 Kirsi Hakaniemi – Chief Digital Officer, Keskisuomalainen
Hakaniemi leads the digital strategy for Keskisuomalainen, a media company that owns 77 Finnish media brands. With over 20 years of experience in the media sector, she has been at the forefront of integrating AI into journalism, including its use in radio news production and journalistic text archives.

🔹 Eeva Sederholm – Content Manager, A-lehdet
With over 20 years in Finnish media, Sederholm is currently the Content Manager at A-lehdet, a leading Finnish magazine company. She has also served as Editor-in-Chief at the regional newspaper Etelä-Saimaa. She will share examples of AI applications in magazine journalism and insights from ongoing AI discussions within journalistic organizations.

🔹 Päivi Maijanen – Associate Professor, LUT University
Maijanen brings an academic perspective to the conversation, drawing from her research on AI’s impact on media organizations. She has worked on a joint project with A-lehdet and Keskisuomalainen, supported by the Media Industry Research Foundation of Finland, which explores AI-driven innovation and new organizational practices in media.
